Approach Pitching

Hi Dave Cahill here with Cahill Golf in beautiful Palm Springs CA and today I am going to talk about precision approach pitching, 100 yards out, 90, 80, 70 all the way in. Last week we talked about short green side pitches and we have discovered we can use the same technique for longer pitches as well.

So, here is a quick review of greenside pitches from last week. We said we do not need the extra of wrist hinge nor do we need to create intentional rotational power. We initiate momentum by moving laterally with our shoulders, hips and knees in a forward motion in the direction of the target. Take the arms back, create the lateral energy and let the arms go with it. The body does turn but, not to create rotational energy.

The exciting thing about the greenside pitching method is that it can be used for precision approach pitching simply by taking the arms back further. So on a 60 yard shot the arms may go back to approximately to the 9 o’clock position. We can even go further back, but remember use the lateral motion and let that lateral motion bring the club to the ball. The pitch shot looks like this with my 58 degree wedge and about an 80 yard shot (see video above).

For Precision Approach Pitching:
• Ball position in the center
• Hands ahead
• Weight over on the left side
• Arms move back
• Then shoulders hips, knees move in a lateral motion towards the target
