Fundamental 3 Weight Transfer

Hi Dave Cahill here with Cahill Golf. Today I am going to talk about Fundamental 3 of the golf swing. Principle number three is correct weight transfer. Transferring your weight correctly during the golf swing will help create consistent powerful golf shots.

I have completed the back swing, so how do I get over to the forward side while properly rotating and maintaining spine angle? Weight transfer actually involves a very small little motion.

Take a back swing. All of the center points stay pretty much constant. Now make a little bit of a motion left. As I move over towards my left side my center of gravity point on my sternum and my hips move about a half an inch maybe only a quarter of an inch. Now I am standing up over my left side. You will feel your weight first shift from the right side toward your left toes and then into your left heel-as you rotate. I can feel the pressure against the left foot, knee and on the hip. In fact they (foot, knee, hip) are all lined up along with my shoulder. Now I need to maintain that pressure and position throughout the rotation.

Weight Transfer: 1/4 " - 1/2" Move to the left

Weight Transfer: 1/4 ” – 1/2″ Move to the left

You will feel pressure against the left foot, knee and on the hip. All are lined along with my shoulder.

The swing looks like this. Set up and establishing your spine angle. Move into the back swing. On the fore swing I am going to maintain my spine angle and rotate through. Do not slide your hips too much toward the target in an effort to shift your weight or you will have trouble rotating. Do not allow yourself to duck away. Keep it constant throughout contact and into this portion of the follow-through. And finally toward the finish it is OK to come up out of it.

Review of Fundamental number 3: Transfer your weight to the left side by moving center of gravity points of your sternum and hips. Roll over to the left side. I’ll stay there with the pressure on. Turn, turn, turn and shoulders rotate, rotate through. Keep the pressure and body position unyielding through this part of the finish and then we can come up and out of it.
