Forward Rotation in the Golf Swing

Hi Dave Cahill here with Cahill Golf in beautiful Palm Springs, CA and today I am going to talk about the torso, shoulder and hip turn or forward rotation on the forward swing. I meet golfers who think about turning in terms of standing on the horizon and turning (see video). But turning like this results in the arms dropping down and then cutting across the plane line which takes the club on an outside-in path. Cutting across the line often results in either a pull or slice.

An easy way to feel how the correct shoulder turn functions is as follows. Hold the club with your left hand only. Take the club back and up with your left arm. Now feel from the left arm shoulder joint how the club can come down. Next put the right hand on the grip. Feel the position of the arms as they drop into position from the hinge of the left arm shoulder joint. See last weeks blog post Left Shoulder Rotation for more.

With the correct turn motion notice the right shoulder and hips as they turn down the same plane line. They don’t turn underneath the plane line. They don’t turn across the line. Shoulders and hips turn down the same line.
