Bunker Shots Up Hill and Buried

Hi Mike Cahill here with Cahill Golf in beautiful Palm Springs. Today I want to talk you about our uphill bunker shots. One thing that you will notice in the video is that the golf ball is buried in the sand. Generally when you have an uphill bunker shot the ball is not going to stay in position unless it is buried.
Approached properly the uphill buried sand shot is a pretty easy shot. One thing to keep in mind with this shot is we do not want an open club face. We want the club face square so it will aggressively dig into the sand; an open face on this shot will likely cause the ball roll off to the side and possibly back down into the bunker. So, keep the club face square.

Keep the club face square.

Keep the club face square.

Place the ball a little bit forward in your stance. You will have a fairly wide range of area where you can enter the sand to hit the ball. As long as you catch some sand, enter anywhere from about a half an inch, all the way to about 4 inches behind the ball. This is an escape lie. Take a full aggressive swing, keeping in mind the ball is just not going to go that far when you hit it. The feeling will be that you are almost leaving the head in the sand. The club will go through.
