Best Golf Grip
Gripping: Foundation for Effective Shots
Holding the club correctly sets the stage for long, consistent, and accurate shots. A correct golf grip allows you to keep the club on the correct plane, keeps the face square to the intended target, and promotes maximum club head speed.
Please view the attached Golf Gripping video to insure that your grip is perfect. The video presentation and written description are from the view point of a right handed golfer.
Follow these step by step instructions.
Step one: Cradle the club in the base of your left hand.
1. Observe your left hand. The creases where your fingers attach to the palm of your hand will be referred to as the base of your fingers.
2. Hold the club in your left hand as if you were shaking hands with the club. Reposition the club handle so it is cradled in the base of your fingers.
3. Wrap your fingers around the club.
4. Rest the club head on the ground in front of you with the face pointing in the direction you intend to hit the ball.
Step Two: Turn your left hand to 45 degrees.
5. Let go of the club and place it aside. Now, extend your left arm straight out in front of you with the palm of your hand facing to the ground. This is the zero degrees position of your left hand.
6. Now turn your hand into a karate chop position. This is the 90 degree position. Your hand has rotated 90 degrees from the zero position.
7. Turn your hand half way between the zero and the 90 degree position. This the 45 degree position.
8. Position the club in the base of your fingers. Close your fingers around the handle. Rotate your hand 45 degrees to the right.
9. Stretch your thumb out, making it as long as possible. Position the thumb on the top of the grip.
Step 3: The right hand life line.
1. Observe the palm of your right hand while slightly cupping it. Notice the crease known as the life line which runs up through your palm and nearly to your wrist.
2. Hold the club correctly in your left hand. Observe the location of the upper most thumb joint on your left hand.
3. Place the top of the right hand’s life line above the upper joint of the left hand.
4. Wrap all the fingers of the right hand around the club. At this point all five fingers of the right hand are touching the handle of the club.
5. Position your right thumb so that it is touching the upper segment of your right index finger.
Step 4: Overlapping the right hand little finger
1. Move the lower segment of the little finger of the right hand between the index finger and the middle finger of the left hand.
Step 5: Position the club correctly.
1. Take your stance
2. Hold the club with a proper grip and place the sole of the club out in front of you in the middle of your stance.
3. As necessary turn the shaft in your hands so the club is facing your target.
4. Firm your grip up slightly just enough so it will slip around within your hands.
5. Move the grip end of the club so that it is even with the inside of your left thigh. This will produce a shaft lean in the direction of the target.
