Divots
Dave Cahill here with Cahill Golf in beautiful Palm Springs, and today I am going to talk about divots. I frequently get the questions “Why am I not taking a divot?” or “Why did I take such a big divot?” So let’s talk first about how to take a divot and how to position the body to take that divot. Very simply the divot taken is a matter of the steepness of the club coming into the ball. If I want the club to take a steeper path towards the ball, the body’s center of gravity points have to be positioned slightly ahead of or even with the ball. (Center of gravity points between sternum and hips in the center of the body.) See Illustration.
Watch the video for an exaggerated position of this concept. Exaggerated the position looks like this. Bring the body’s center of gravity points ahead of the ball. Remember this is an exaggerated illustration. If you used this extreme position you will hit down on the ball, but take a large divot first!
For a healthy divot, the body’s center of gravity points will be even or only very slightly ahead of the ball. From this position I will hit the ball first and take a divot second. Remember, at the very least get your center points even with the ball on the forward swing. Do this during your weight transfer; move even with or slightly ahead of the ball. Stay there. Turn through. Then you will get a nice little divot.
