Foundational Golf Grip
Today I will talk about the very important foundational golf grip.
1. Starting with the target side hand. If you are right handed your target side hand will be the left hand. (Left handed golfers: your target side hand will be the right hand). Look at your target side hand. You have the tip of the fingers and the palm of the hand, where they join up, we will call the base.
2. Point the target side hand towards the ground. Lay the club across the base where the fingers meet the palm.
3. Now take that target side hand and turn it half way between vertical and horizontal – on the diagonal at 45 degrees. Individual flexibility can come into play, so the amount the hand is turned may vary somewhat. Close the target side hand around the club.
Now for the other hand,
4. Right handed golfers should identify the thumb joint of their left hand and the top of the life line on the right hand (Left handed golfers should identify the thumb joint of their right hand and the top of the life line on the left hand).
5. Right handed golfers: bring the open right hand straight in from the right side towards the left hand. (Left handed golfers; bring the open left hand straight in from the left side towards the right hand.)
6. Right handed golfers: Place the life line of the right hand just above the thumb joint of the left hand. (Left handed golfers: Place the life line of the left hand just above the thumb joint of the right hand.)
7. Cover that thumb joint up and wrap the fingers around.
8. Bring the thumb and the index finger close together.
Now we have a grip that will form a great foundation for our swing.
There are various ways to grip a golf club. PGA Master Instructor Dave Cahill and PGA Instructor Mike Cahill are ready to help find the golf grip that works for you, a grip method that will give a solid connection between the hands throughout your swing.
