High Soft Golf Pitches by Increasing Loft
Hi, Dave Cahill here with Cahill Golf. I am at the Cimarron Golf Resort in Palm Springs, CA. Today I will talk about pitching, specifically about how to hit a nice soft little golf pitch shot. It is all about loft. The more loft I have on the club the higher it will go and the softer it will land.
So, how do I generate more loft? Of course, I can do it by picking a club that has more loft, say a 60-degree wedge or 56-degree wedge. But, there are a couple of other things I can do to put more loft on a club. Moving the hands ahead of the ball delofts the club. Moving the hands father back lofts the club more. However, there is a point at which the hands get too far back, that is the point at which the shaft tips back behind the ball. That makes it difficult to hit the shot. The shaft can be even with the ball but not behind it. The second thing that can be done to increase loft is to position the ball more towards my front or target side foot.
In review, look at the target, lay the club behind the ball. Next, establish how much loft is required. If I want a lot of loft I move the hands back towards a position that makes the shaft more perpendicular to the ground. Remember the hands should not move behind the ball. I may also move the golf ball more towards the front of my stance to increase the loft. Next, I finish my setup position by moving very slightly to my left side. I am now ready to hit the shot with the most loft I can. I focus on where I want the ball to land. Complete the shot. A nice little soft shot to the green.
