Left Shoulder Rotation
Getting the cub started down the right path
Hi. Dave Cahill here with Cahill Golf in beautiful Palm Springs, CA and today I am going to talk about left shoulder rotation and it’s role in getting the cub started down the right path on the forward swing. I see a lot of players who get stuck having their left arm and their right arm pinned to their chest on the forward swing. They end up trying to turn down the line on the forward swing but cannot. With their arms pinned to the chest the golf club drifts across or goes underneath the plane line.
To get an idea of the correct arm position, hold the club with your left hand only. Take the club back and up with your left arm. Now feel from the left arm shoulder joint how the club can come down. Next put the right hand on the grip. Feel the position of the arms as they drop into position from the hinge of the left arm shoulder joint. Now put into the mix the little lateral forward motion, the weight shift and rotation of the swing over to the left side. You will notice the place where the turn happens; you’ll turn right with it. So, feel the motion from the left arm shoulder joint, let the flow go with the weight shift and rotate through the swing. The swing has a nice fluid feeling to it. Remember do not pin the arms to the chest as you will not be able to move fluidly through the swing. Relax and let the club swing through the ball.
