Practicing Setup Alignment
Hi Dave Cahill here with Cahill Golf. Today we are going to talk about improving alignment during set up. An easy way to check setup alignment is using the following practice while on the driving range.
1. Find your target.
2. Using your customary set up; align to the target as you usually would.
3. Next take either your golf cub or an alignment stick and lie it down across the tips of your toes (or across the backs of your heels).
4. Now, step back, behind the ball to see where you are actually aimed. If the club you placed at your toes or heels is just a little bit parallel left of your actual target, you have properly aligned yourself.
5. If the club on the ground points to the right or more than a little left of your target you not aligned correctly. In this case re-adjust the alignment stick. Now step up to the ball. This is what correct set up alignment should look like. Take your practice shot; swing squarely through the ball to your target.
One additional suggestion, golfers frequently line up correctly when the target is straight ahead but are challenged by targets to the right or left. For this reason, I suggest to students that they practice setup alignment with shots to a variety of targets across the driving range: straight ahead, left and right. If you practice setup alignment regularly you will improve your on course shots. There are other factors that affect alignment. If you would like to learn more give Mike or I a call and set up a lesson.
