Putting Downhill to Green

Good afternoon, Dave Cahill here with Cahill Golf at the Cimarron Golf Resort, Palm Springs, California. Today we are talking about using your putter from off the green down a steep embankment. Why use the putter instead of a wedge from off the green? Because with a wedge it is difficult to hit your shot downhill and control the distance of that pitch out and unto the green. The pitch will tend to go very low, skittering out across the green. This is especially true if the cup happens to be closer to the edge on the green side. By using a putter you’ll control the distance of the ball out and unto the green with greater ease.

So, my ball has settled into position on a steep embankment. I am looking downhill to the green. The grass is an important thing to consider when using a putter from off the green. From my position the grass is not too long, it is puttable. The golf ball will roll through it. I set up with the ball just a little bit back in my stance, my hands a little bit ahead of the ball. Then I putt through the ball with my usual tempo.

The putt rolls easily over the grass and out onto the green. I am happy with the balls position on the green. Using a putter to get the ball down the steep embankment unto the green helped to increase my control of the balls distance and speed.
