Success Hitting 3-Wood from Fairway
Dave Cahill here with Cahill Golf. I am at the Cimarron Golf Resort here in Palm Springs, California. Today we are talking about hitting the 3 wood from a fairway lie. There are two keys to hitting a 3 wood from a fairway lie. It is important the club is traveling on a downward, descending blow as it hits the ball. At the very least, the club must strike the ball with a level blow.
Because of the lack of loft on a 3 wood, players tend to want to help the ball up. In an effort to get behind the ball, golfers create problems for themselves. Two common problems are tilting the upper body which causes thin worm burners. Secondly, players leave their weight on the back foot while coming through the ball which causes the club to bottom out behind the ball and results in very fat shots.
To make sure you hit the ball with a downward, descending blow from the club, pay attention to the vertical center line of your body. Keep the center points steady through the shot. Maintain your balance, shift your weight, turn the hips and shoulders around a stable vertical centered spine. You’ll come through the ball successfully with a downward descending blow.
