“Weighting” for it Golf Power

Hi, Dave Cahill here with Cahill Golf in Palm Springs. Today I am going to talk about waiting for it. You may have heard that phrase before. What exactly are we waiting for? We are actually waiting to get into the right position so we can turn and/or release into the ball (Fig. 1). I am trying to get into this position, about to turn into the ball.

Waiting to get into the right position so we can turn and/or release into the ball.

1. Waiting to get into the right position so we can turn and/or release into the ball.

How do we do that? Well, it starts with the transition from the top (Fig. 2).

It starts with the transition from the top.

2. It starts with the transition from the top.

Once we are in the right position at the top weight shifts from the right foot to the left foot (in a right handed golfer) and as our weight is transferring* our hands come down into this position. I am not pulling my hands down rather my hands are relaxing, my arms are relaxing and I am dropping down into position. The hands are nearly even with the right thigh; my weight has been rapidly transferring to the left or front target side foot, now I am ready to turn. So, when the hands are nearly even with the thigh (Fig. 3), I am ready to turn and that is the thing I am waiting for.
From the front position it looks like this, Take your backswing, weight is centered on the inside of my right foot. Make a little transition move, the weight moves over to the left side while the hands drop down even with the thigh. Now turn into the ball. That is what we are waiting for.

Hands are nearly even with the thigh.

Weight transfer* in the golf swing is a coaching term used to describe movement of bodyweight between the feet during the swing. [During the backswing, weight is initially moved towards the back or right foot for a right handed golfer. Just before the top of backswing, backwards movement ceases and weight begins to move towards the front or left foot. During the early downswing phase, weight is rapidly transferred towards the front foot. At ball contact and follow through, weight is positioned on the front foot.
